Type of qualification – Level 3 Course (equivalent to 0.5 A Level)
Exam Board – OCR
Are you interested in taking Maths further than GCSE but not sure A Level Maths is the right choice? Perhaps looking for some maths content to help support other subject areas but do not want to study an entire A Level? Then Core Maths might be the option you are looking for.
New at S6C for Year 12s in September 2021, Core Maths is the bridge between GCSE and Level 3. The course is aimed at students who have achieved at least a grade 5 in GCSE Maths and want to continue with the subject but may not have met entry requirements for A Level Maths.
The content is based around the new GCSE Maths Higher Tier with around 20% taken from other specifications, for example A Level Maths. You will achieve a Level 3 qualification that is worth the same as an AS subject (in terms of UCAS points).
Core Maths is a great option if you want maths that is useful in your study of other subjects – you will study data and finance as compulsory topics, and then optional topics can be adapted to suit what interests students. This course is a great option for those studying Psychology, Biology and Geography, as well as Chemistry and Physics if you are not planning to study A Level Maths.
