Remote Education Guidelines

Guidelines and Expectations for Online Learning at S6C

We are so pleased to be able to run live lessons to timetable, and to offer pastoral support, study support, and some clubs-  an experience which has been very rare in state education this year. Here are a few guidelines and expectations to keep everyone safe and to maximise the success of online sessions.

We can offer the loan of a laptop for students on our discretionary bursary and we can also offer a range of options to any student experiencing home IT issues, such as wifi connectivity problems. Students should contact their tutor for a bursary form – to let them know about IT issues at home – or to request study support with online learning.

  • All lessons will run at the same time as their normal timetable, and therefore self directed study will also be set for tasks to be completed in between
  • Staff will run subject lessons using Google Meet and all students will access resources through their Google classrooms
  • All students are expected to be punctual, not to miss the introductory explanation of the work
  • All lessons will have a register taken to ensure we know that they are engaging. If not then the college will message home later that day to make parents aware
  • Students will be expected to initially have their microphone on mute but may have their camera turned on.
  • Staff will expect to have a dialogue with the students at appropriate points in the lesson, so students will be expected to respond and share their answers and ideas. They will have to unmute to respond.
  • Teachers may ask students to put their cameras on during the discussion section of the lesson. This will allow the teacher to read the students reaction to the question as we do in a classroom setting, allowing us to determine if the student is more confident with the content and the ideas being discussed. Students are able to change their background before logging into Google Meet or whilst in Meet so that their privacy of their home is maintained.
  • Students should not be on simultaneous calls with others outside S6C during a college class or club
  • If students need to collaborate during a lesson then they should use a breakout room on Google Meet, or use Chat to message or video call. Please do not set up study groups using other social media platforms as the college system offers important safeguards, and is accessible to all.
  • 1:1 sessions with staff should take place using college platforms. Your mobile phone numbers are listed on schoolpod and may be used if we are worried about you but all staff personal numbers will be withheld.
  • Students should be up and dressed for study – this is important for safeguarding reasons but also for positive mental health and wellbeing.

S6C’s response to DFE Guidelines

DfE ExpectationsOur remote learning practice
set assignments so that pupils have meaningful and ambitious work each day in a number of different subjectsA full timetable is being run remotely and all teachers are delivering live lessons via Google Classroom, Meet and Chat.

Where this is not possible due to illness, asynchronous teaching is being used in a blended approach through Google Classroom.

All teachers are setting additional self directed study via Google Classroom, as per our normal expectations if they were attending in person.

College data captures are running once per half term.
set work that is of equivalent length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school, and as a minimum:primary: 3 hours a day, on average, across the school cohortsecondary: 4 hours a day, with more for pupils working towards formal qualifications this yearA full timetable is being run remotely and all teachers are delivering live lessons via Google Classroom, Meet and Chat.

Where this is not possible due to illness, asynchronous teaching is being used in a blended approach through Google Classroom.

A minimum of 4 hours of self directed study is being set per subject per week.

Students will continue to participate in their timetabled life skills programme.
provide frequent, clear explanations of new content, delivered by a teacher or through high-quality curriculum resources or videosA full timetable is being run remotely and all teachers are delivering live lessons via Google Classroom, Meet and Chat.

Teachers will engage students through providing a clear explanation of the objective of tasks and learning experiences to achieve the appropriate outcomes.
have systems for checking, at least weekly, whether pupils are engaging with their work, and inform parents immediately where engagement is a concernTeachers are using their normal methods of tracking engagement in class, with contact home via email, then phone and finally a letter via recorded delivery, as per our normal procedures.

The college is keeping a record of weekly ‘engagement checks’ outlining how a student is participating in remote lessons:

– Fully engaged
– Partially engaged
– Not engaged
– Illness or exceptional circumstance

Faculty Leaders monitor and discuss these records on a weekly basis and develop relevant individual strategies.

The standard S6C Student Discipline Policy is being followed.

Google and SchoolPod’s Markbook is being used to track additional information on student grading to assist in assessment.
gauge how well pupils are progressing through the curriculum using questions and other suitable tasks, and provide feedback, at least weekly, using digitally facilitated or whole-class feedback where appropriateThe focus is on high quality remote teaching and learning through normal lessons delivered remotely. Lessons are running live and teachers are using standard techniques to direct questioning and feedback.

Teachers have had further and ongoing training on how to increase remote interaction in lessons using Google tools such as Jamboard, breakout rooms, Forms etc.

All work is being submitted electronically via Google Classroom and marked using the system as per normal lessons.
enable teachers to adjust the pace or difficulty of what is being taught in response to questions or assessments, including, where necessary, revising material or simplifying explanations to ensure pupils’ understandingLive lessons mean that students can ask questions in real-time if they need support.

Normal teaching is happening remotely in all lessons and teachers are making appropriate adjustments to work and assessments as they normally would in class.

Those students with specific needs have the facility to be onsite to complete work which is supervised by members of the teaching team. This is coordinated through the Pastoral Lead and relevant checks are in place.

Teachers and students continue to have access to the learning mentor both remotely and in college.
