S6C Update

13 September 2024
We have had a fantastic start to the term and the atmosphere at the college is really upbeat, with our students showing a maturity towards learning which is hugely encouraging. Clubs and societies began last week and with such an eclectic mix of activities, there is something for everyone, from artistic pursuits, sports, gaming and yoga to debating, reading, volunteering and documentaries, with a little coding and crocheting thrown in. New this year are some very exciting additions including Pages with Paddy (a reading programme in primary schools with Paddy the therapy dog), The Linguistic Olympiad Club and Law, Politics and Candy. All very worthy activities to help improve skills, forge new friendships and boost applications for your next steps.

At S6C, our approach to teaching offers a brilliant stepping stone to the independence of higher education, employment or an apprenticeship. Students attend lessons and are then expected to undertake 4.5 hours of independent study per subject, in order to support their learning and retain and extend the knowledge and skills taught in college. If you feel you (or your child) is not meeting this requirement, please feel free to contact Head of College Ben Hillier at bhillier@s6c.mlp.college and we can help you make the changes needed to get the most out of your college experience.

Last week, Head of College Ben Hillier met with BBC journalist Kelly Morgan to highlight how the current BTEC confusion is causing huge issues for sixth form colleges across the country. Please click on the image below to listen to the interview.

Attendance
Craig Chambers – Assistant Head of College/Designated Safeguarding Lead

Well done to everyone with 100% attendance this week. Many students have had really impressive attendance so far. We have had a great start back to the college year, but we need everyone to play their part. If your attendance has not been as good as it can be, make sure you are in college every day and on time, ready to learn. We have great students and great staff who are here to support you with your learning. We have amazing pastoral staff and we want you here as part of our college community. Have a great weekend and we will see you all on Monday to go again for another fantastic week at S6C.

Sport Academies
Adam Jones – Director of Sport

What a fantastic first week back for the Sport Academies. Squads are starting to take shape and the future is looking exciting. We saw 17 at netball training, 34 Footballers and 22 Rugby players. Helen (Netball coach), JK (Rugby coach) and Ben (Bournemouth AFC coach) have all been super impressed with the standard of play compared to last year. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who have supported our students, allowing them to miss lessons to follow their passion.
Match Report
Last Wednesday, our new look AFC Bournemouth squad played their first game against the mighty Swindon Town. It was a superb performance all round, with a deserved 6-0 win against Swindon! Max opened the scoring (after being played through by Ben) and finished it clinically in the bottom right corner. Right after the first goal, Olly Bowden came on the pitch at left wing and drew a foul in the box, Olly King converted the penalty in great fashion. For the third goal Josh cut it back and Olly Bowden smashed it into the back of the net. Just before half time Aaron did a lovely back-heel pass to Max who slotted it away in the bottom corner. We went into half time 4-0 up!

The second half wasn’t as intense but we fought hard to keep on top and to get the clean sheet! Max played Olly Bowden through and Olly’s shot hit the post and Aaron was there to follow it up. Theo also scored after following up Olly Bowdens strike. We then held on to the lead and Osric made a heroic save to keep the clean sheet.

In summary a great performance all round, a great performance from the first year students and a superb start to our season!

Goals – Max x2, Olly K, Olly B, Aaron, Theo
Assists – Ben, Olly B x2, Max, Josh, Aaron

Man of the Match – Ben Shering

Laurence Rushby – Teacher of Art and Photography
Our year 12 Art students have been examining the relationship between Destruction/Creation/Transformation, in a first book project, using inspirations from various artists from the 20th and 21st century, as well as their own experience of materials. We absolutely love their work!
