S6C Update

18 October 2024
We have reached half term and everyone is ready for a well-deserved break. Thank you to S6C Governors John Hawkins and Sarah Bersey for visiting us and speaking with staff and students and to all our staff for their contribution to our October Open Evening. We welcomed over 450 visitors to our college and it is exciting to know that S6C is so highly regarded and the numbers of young people interested in coming to study with us are increasing every year.

Wellbeing Day 2024
We had a hugely successful day with an array of sessions for students to attend. From improving mental health in the form of Alpaca cuddles, board games and origami to developing physical wellbeing with boxing, football and couch to 5k, with some safety advice and sustainability workshops thrown in, there was something for everyone. Thank you to Liz Stavely for her work in arranging such a useful and enjoyable day. As a college we understand the importance of looking after your physical and mental health and if you ever have concerns regarding your child’s well being please speak to Craig Chambers: cchambers@s6c.mlp.college

Photography Trip to Lacock Abbey
The photography students in years 12 and 13 have had the great opportunity to visit the Fox Talbot Museum of Early Photography at Lacock Abbey this term. On the day, they also visited the grounds of the Abbey and the house itself, taking a series of photoshoots to practice their newly acquired skills.

It was amazing to be able to benefit from such a grand background and landscape for our photoshoot.

I was so glad to see the very place where some scenes of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were filmed.

Trip to Roche Court Discovery Day, Articulation Prize
This term, year 12 art students attended a Discovery Day at Roche Court, New Arts Centre for the Articulation Prize, a public speaking competition organised by the National Gallery, London. The students learnt how to research and develop their knowledge of artists’ works and their public speaking skills. They also had the amazing opportunity to interview renowned artist Bill Woodrow who was visiting the gallery especially for this occasion. At the end of the day, all students had a chance to speak publicly about an artwork of their choice.

What a great achievement for all of them. They faced their fear and expressed their opinions clearly in front of an audience. I am very proud of every single one of them. A really great day out!

Poole Grammar 6th Form 12 vs 12 S6C Rugby Academy
What a breathless Third Round match in the Continental Cup. Boy, we made hard work of that on Wednesday. As we drew there was no extra time so the away team advanced into the next round. Certainly not the way we wanted to progress but we will take it!  Lots of lessons learned and things to build on before the Fourth Round. First half we had the lion share of the first 15 minutes but couldn’t quite turn the pressure into points. First time they get into our red zone we concede, 5-0 down. Then a yellow card – we panicked on the ball and overplayed in dangerous areas. Against good teams we need to play in the right areas. Loved the fight and resilience, however, in defence and we managed being down to 14 players well. After a bit of a pep talk at half time we came out fired up and got off to the best start – a fine team score finished off by the impressive Buka (fine performance today). We had more chances but again decision-making let us down. Our attack didn’t fire like it normally does. Poole then came back and scored after a sustained attack. This woke us up and we responded with another good try. The game was then 12-12 and it ebbed and flowed. We lacked a bit of composure but our defence particularly in the last couple of minutes was outstanding! Full time whistle went – no one knew what happened next but luckily we got through as the away team!

We go again and need to work hard in training in the coming weeks before round 4! Well done today boys – proper test and we stood up!

Plymouth Argyle (A) 4 vs 0 S6C Bournemouth Academy
An unfortunate result Wednesday, due to a performance littered with silly mistakes at the back. We struggled to perform, yet created a couple of outstanding chances, which we didn’t capitalise on. So, a combination of defending poorly and not being clinical cost us!! We moved the ball around really well in spells, without controlling the game. We felt we were still in the game even at 3-0 down. We just needed to get the next goal. We started the second half much better with more opportunities and ball retention, causing Plymouth Argyle some trouble. But we could not find the breakthrough we so desperately needed. On reflection our intensity / controlled aggression today was lacking, as we seemed apprehensive to engage and battle. This is not like us. Max unfortunately hit the bar with three others (JB, Alex, Harry) getting saved by the opposition goalkeeper which was unlucky and would have changed the game.

MOTM
Olly Bowden put some BIG challenges in and created two chances which should have led to goals. He demonstrated a desire to win the ball back with great intentions, showing good character.

This is not the result we were looking for today, as our standard slipped. We’ll go again next week hoping for a better performance and result.

S6C Bournemouth Football Academy 7-a-side Football Tournament Burgate
The group traveled to a 7-a-side Tournament hosted at Burgate School. Being placed in group 2, the team were faced with group matches against Ferndown and two Burgate sides. The team won their first match against Burgate A. They moved the ball with good tempo and some clinical finishing led to a 3-0 victory. The second game they faced Ferndown School, again dominated possession but this time less clinical and with a lapse in concentration they gave up an equaliser with the last kick of the game to draw 1-1. The final group game left the players knowing a point would be enough to qualify for the semi-finals. They played Burgate C and a gritty performance and a piece of brilliance from young Oliver Bowde led to a 2-0 victory meaning the group was topped with 7 points from a possible 9. They then faced the runners up in group 1 which was another Burgate side. Their team defended very well against our lads and countered effectively. 2-2 led to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, with the scores 3-2 after 5 penalties, Harry M saw his penalty saved and the team were eliminated at this point. A real mixed day on the pitch, but the experience and excitement of tournament football was an enjoyable one for all.
